Saint Joseph, co-patron of Nociglia
📅 Every year, on 19 March
Nociglia celebrates Saint Joseph on 19 March, alongside the town's other co-patrons.
On the origin of the village the historians disagree: for one it was born after the Turks destroyed Castro in 1537; for another much earlier, in 1156, when William the Bad razed Vaste. The name, at least, comes from walnuts. On the map of the via Traiana the place is marked as Nucillium.
In a pizzica song, Core meu, a line says that the singer's tambourine is from Nociglia: they were made here. Inside the chapel of the Madonna dell'Idri stands an older Byzantine church, of the eleventh or twelfth century, with frescoes one on top of another, from the thirteenth century to the eighteenth. The specchia of the Motta, on the other hand, was destroyed in the nineteen seventies.
