Saint Victoria, winter patron of Spongano
📅 Every year, on 23 December
Spongano celebrates Saint Victoria a second time on 23 December.
The old coat of arms had, under three stars, two sponges with an upright reed stem between them: the sponges for the swallow holes that drink the rainwater, the reed for the ground where water stands. The figure, however, embarrassed those who looked at it, and in 1997 the comune had to remake it: now there is only one sponge.
In the countryside there are a dolmen called Piedi Grandi and three menhirs: one of the three, in 1607, was turned into an Osanna. The mother church is of 1771, but the side aisles are of the eighteen hundreds: the right one was paid for by the people of the village, the left one by baron Bacile di Castiglione.
