Lotzorai

Province: Nuoro · Region: Sardinia · Population: 2,151 · Postal code: 08040

The name of Lotzorai enters written history in 1117, and it does so through a miracle: a life of the bishop of Suelli tells of a Lozoranus brought back to life by the saint. The village lies a kilometre from the sea, hemmed in by two rivers, and on the hill guarding its southern entrance stand the ruins of the castle of Medusa, a medieval fortress built on a Phoenician base and still wrapped in legend. Castle and town were seized in 1323 by Berengario Carroz, and in 1363 the place was annexed to the county of Quirra.

Offshore, about a mile from the coast, three uninhabited islets form the isola dell'Ogliastra: the only residents are colonies of cormorants and gulls. On the largest a statue of the Madonna d'Ogliastra has been set up, and every August a procession reaches it aboard small boats, which makes the feast a piece of seamanship as much as of devotion. On land, meanwhile, the territory is dotted with wetlands: the river park of the Pramaera, the Pollu pond, the paùle of Iscrixedda behind the beach.
