Feast of Saint Gavinus
📅 Every year, on 25 October
On 25 October Oniferi celebrates its patron Saint Gavinus; the town is a living center of the canto a tenore tradition, a UNESCO World Heritage element.
Created by decree in 1927, Nuoro is among the most thinly populated provinces in Italy: 74 municipalities and barely over two hundred thousand people across a vast slice of eastern Sardinia, the smallest village down to 230 residents. The capital, also called Nuoro, is the largest town and still counts under forty thousand inhabitants, so no single city sets the tone. From the Barbagia highlands the land drops to the Tyrrhenian coast within a few dozen kilometres.
Most people arrive along the sea: Orosei and Dorgali on the gulf, Siniscola to the north, Tortolì towards Ogliastra, and Cala Goloritzé, the pebble cove a landslide opened in 1962 below the cliffs of Baunei. Inland is where the province makes sense: Oliena under the Supramonte, Fonni, and Orgosolo, whose walls have carried more than 150 murals since 1969. In Nuoro, the house where Grazia Deledda was born, winner of the 1926 Nobel, is now a museum.
