Feast of San Nicola di Bari
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Bortigiadas, a municipality of 800 inhabitants in the province of Sassari, celebrates its patron San Nicola di Bari (Saint Nicholas of Bari).
The name means a cork grove, and the arms say so: a cork oak, and on it twelve acorns, one for each of the main hamlets the village is made of, with two doves beside them. The place is first written down in the fourteenth century as Orticlada; in the archive of the Crown of Aragon in Barcelona it appears as Gortiglaca.
Until the middle of the twentieth century they spoke Logudorese Sardinian here, a peninsula of it pushed into Gallura; today only Gallurese is spoken. The line from Sassari to Tempio and Palau crosses the territory with two stations and with one of the only two helicoidal tunnels in the Sardinian network; the passenger service stopped in 1997, and now only the Trenino Verde goes through.
