Province of Sassari, Italy: Towns & Things to Do

Set up in 1859, two years before Italy was unified, the province of Sassari covered the whole northern half of Sardinia until 1927; on 1 April 2025 that territory was split between the Metropolitan City of Sassari and the Province of Gallura North-East Sardinia. The 92 municipalities gathered here run from the Gulf of Asinara in the west to the Gallura coast on the Tyrrhenian side. Sassari, the island's second city, grew up inland in the Middle Ages, well away from the coast.

On the western side, Alghero has spoken Catalan since the 1300s, under the cliffs of Capo Caccia where Neptune's Grotto opens at sea level; nearby are La Pelosa beach at Stintino and the Doria fortress at Castelsardo. Eastwards begins Gallura: Olbia, the Costa Smeralda that the Aga Khan willed into being at Arzachena in 1962, and the La Maddalena archipelago, sixty-two granite islands made a national park in 1994, Caprera included, where Garibaldi spent his last years.
