They call Gesico the village of the seven churches, and three of those seven are gone. The one that counts most stands out in the country and is dedicated to Sant'Amatore, an African bishop who by tradition was beheaded in the sixth century together with the deacon Ferdinando and the subdeacon Amatello, for refusing to sacrifice before a pagan altar.
The saint's feast, centuries old, has ended up carrying something else along with it: the snail festival, on the third weekend of October, which has made this village of the Trexenta one of the eleven Italian cities of the snail. The wheat, instead, is on the coat of arms: six gold ears, three above and three below a red band.
