Feast of Saint Teresa of Ávila
📅 Every year, on 15 October
On 15 October Gesturi celebrates its patron Saint Teresa of Ávila; the town is also linked to Blessed Nicola da Gesturi, beatified in 1999 by John Paul II.
South Sardinia is a province that was assembled rather than grown. In 2016 the regional government merged the former provinces of Carbonia-Iglesias and Medio Campidano with the municipalities left outside the Cagliari metropolitan area, producing a huge territory with no real centre: Carbonia, its administrative seat, has fewer than 30,000 residents. It runs from the Sulcis mining country through the Campidano plain out to the islands off the south-western coast.
The main reason to come is Barumini, a village of barely a thousand people, home to Su Nuraxi, the best-known Bronze Age nuraghe complex in Sardinia. Everything else rewards patience: Iglesias and its mining past, Sant'Antioco on its own island, the farming towns around Villacidro and Guspini. There are 107 municipalities here, many with a few hundred inhabitants, and almost none built with visitors in mind.
