Villa Defregger

📍 Bolzano, Trentino-South Tyrol · 49/100

Villa Defregger is a noble residence in Bolzano, built for the painter Franz Defregger, who used it on his frequent stays.

What to see

The villa was built in 1879 according to the canons of historicism by the architect Sebastian Altmann, the same as the Palazzo Widmann. In 1889, again by Altmann, it was enlarged with the addition of the turret and a broad portal; the frieze is by Albert Stolz. The villa and its garden have been protected since 1985.

At the time of construction the building stood in the comune of Dodiciville, in the locality of San Giovanni in Villa (St. Johann im Dorf), which was later absorbed into the provincial capital in 1911; the same district in which the church of San Giovanni in Villa stands.

Visiting

The villa is at San Giovanni in Villa, in Bolzano; being a residence, the sources consulted give no public openings, so access should be checked.

Our editors' tip

Look at the turret and the large portal: they were added in 1889, ten years after the villa was built, by the same architect.
