Of the province's 116 municipalities, 102 have a German-speaking majority and eight speak Ladin; Italian is mainly heard in the two largest towns, Bolzano and Merano. This is Italy's northernmost province, with a level of self-government found nowhere else in the country: it keeps 90% of the tax revenue raised here and is the wealthiest province in Italy. With Trentino and Austrian Tyrol it forms a Euroregion matching historic Tyrol.
The Dolomites do most of the pulling. Lago di Braies is best reached early, before the day-trippers; the Alpe di Siusi plateau sits above Castelrotto, with Ortisei below it in one of the Ladin-speaking valleys. In Bolzano the archaeology museum keeps Ötzi, the man found in a glacier. Merano and Bressanone are the towns to stop in on the way down.
