La Valle

Province: South Tyrol · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 1,299 · Postal code: 39030

At La Valle the hour is read off the mountains: two peaks of the Sasso di Santa Croce are called Cima Nove and Cima Dieci, Nine Peak and Ten Peak, because the sun passes over them at those hours, and together they make a natural sundial. The village is Ladin: almost everyone has Ladin as a first language. On the Armentara meadows, from the third century before Christ, wooden huts were built for hay, with a technique that stayed the same for thousands of years.

The German name, Wengen, is a translation of the Ladin Ciamps, the fields. In 1296 the rent-roll of the monastery of Sonnenburg already listed the farms of the valley one by one. The chapel of Saint Barbara, patron of miners, is of 1490: iron and silver were dug here. In 1930 the comune was merged into San Martino in Badia, and became autonomous again only in 1965.
