Feast of Saint Peter the Apostle and Martyr
📅 Every year, on 29 June
On 29 June Castiglion Fibocchi, a municipality of 2,218 inhabitants in the province of Arezzo, celebrates its patron Saint Peter the Apostle and Martyr.
The name has nothing to do with the conspiracy: it comes from the sons of Bocco de' Pazzi of the Valdarno, and in old documents the village is Castilium Filiorum Bocchi. Of the seven towers of its walls one is left, but two gates still stand. In 1644 grand duke Ferdinando II made his general Alessandro del Borro a marquis; with Torricelli he studied how to drain the Val di Chiana, and he died at Corfu.
At the plebiscite of 1860 on annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia the noes won here: one hundred and six votes to keep the grand duchy separate against forty-six for annexation, and from then on Ferdinand IV was jokingly called the king of Castiglion Fibocchi. On the morning of 17 March 1981, in Licio Gelli's villa, the membership lists of the secret masonic lodge P2 were found.
