Bistecca alla Fiorentina T-bone cut of Chianina beef, grilled rare over embers
A T-bone cut from Chianina beef, grilled rare over embers with no seasoning at all: Florence's signature dish.
Read more →The bridge behind Mona Lisa's shoulder, the Romito di Laterina, stands in this province. Arezzo, its capital, holds the south-eastern corner of Tuscany, and the 36 municipalities around it cover very different ground: the Casentino and Pratomagno mountains and valleys to the north, the fertile Tiber and Chiana valleys to the south. The province even administers an exclave stranded inside the province of Rimini, over in Emilia-Romagna.
Travel here is town-by-town rather than view-by-view. Cortona looks down over the Chiana valley, Sansepolcro sits at the far edge towards the Marche, and San Giovanni Valdarno and Montevarchi hold the working stretch of the Arno valley between Florence and Arezzo. The Casentino, closed in by its own ridges, rewards a slow drive rather than a day trip.
