In the pieve of San Lorenzo there is a Madonna painted by the young Giotto. The pieve is recorded in 934, the present church is a rebuilding of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and the hexagonal bell tower carries the date 1263.
Florence walled the town in 1351, with four gates and a street cutting it lengthwise; power was held by a podestà sent from Florence every six months. Each gate had two keys: one kept by the podestà, the other by an appointee who changed every three months. There are 17,854 residents.
