Bistecca alla Fiorentina T-bone cut of Chianina beef, grilled rare over embers
A T-bone cut from Chianina beef, grilled rare over embers with no seasoning at all: Florence's signature dish.
Read more →No other Italian province touches as many neighbours: the Metropolitan City of Florence, which took over from the old province in 2015, borders Emilia-Romagna to the north and then Arezzo, Siena, Pisa, Lucca, Pistoia and Prato. Its 41 municipalities are the most of any Tuscan province, and the ground they cover is where the Renaissance began, from Apennine ridges facing Bologna to the Arno valley running west towards Empoli.
Most visitors never leave the city, and it is hard to argue: the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, the Uffizi, Michelangelo's David at the Accademia, Ponte Vecchio, Palazzo Pitti. The rest of the metropolitan area repays the detour, though. Fiesole sits on the hill above Florence, Vinci is the village that gave Leonardo his name, Certaldo keeps its walled upper town in the Elsa valley.
