Magliano in Toscana

Province: Grosseto · Region: Tuscany · Population: 3,633 · Postal code: 58051

In this territory the Disc of Magliano was found, a lead sheet written in Etruscan: it is one of the documents worked on to understand that language. Around it lie the necropolises of Heba and other Etruscan sites, while the village's name is Roman and means no more than «the farm of Manlius». The borough, and with it Montiano and Pereta, sits inside its walls.

On the twenty-second of March 1944, at Maiano Lavacchio, eleven young men were shot for refusing to enlist in the army of the Italian Social Republic. The youngest was eighteen, the oldest thirty-seven. They are remembered as the martyrs of Istia, and on the spot where they were killed there is now a chapel.
