Bistecca alla Fiorentina T-bone cut of Chianina beef, grilled rare over embers
A T-bone cut from Chianina beef, grilled rare over embers with no seasoning at all: Florence's signature dish.
Read more →Grosseto runs the largest province in Tuscany and one of the emptiest in Italy: its population density is among the lowest in the country. Its 28 municipalities take in the whole southern end of the region, from the Colline Metallifere mining hills across to Monte Amiata, down the Ombrone river to the Tyrrhenian coast, as far as the Chiarone stream that marks the border with Lazio. All of it is the Maremma, a name that spills well past the administrative lines.
The coast draws the crowds: Follonica, Castiglione della Pescaia and the Monte Argentario headland, where ferries leave for the islands of Giglio and Giannutri. Inland the pace drops, with Massa Marittima up in the metal-bearing hills, Manciano near the Lazio line, Castel del Piano on the flank of Monte Amiata, and long empty roads between them.
