The pier was built in 1877 to load Apuan marble onto ships; today it is the seafront walk of the Tyrrhenian's most exclusive resort. Forte dei Marmi is an urban garden of villas among pinewoods, genteel bicycles, historic beach clubs with striped awnings and the Wednesday market where cashmere is religion.
The Capannina di Franceschi, open since 1929, ranks among Italy's historic venues: the entire twentieth century passed through. The Apuan Alps behind provide the marble backdrop; at dusk, the aperitivo watches the gulf lights as far as Palmaria. Understatement and deckchairs: the formula hasn't changed in a century.
