Camaiore is Versilia with a hinterland: the "Campus Maior" of the Via Francigena — Sigeric noted the stage in the tenth century — keeps the Benedictine abbey of San Pietro and a collegiate church commanding the main street; olive hills climb toward the Apuan Alps, the villages of Casoli and Metato watching the sea from above.
At the Lido, the equipped beach continues the sandy front between Viareggio and Forte dei Marmi, its promenade made for families. On the table, Camaiore's tordelli with ragù claim their extra letter proudly: authentic Versilia passes through here, between festivals and Corpus Domini processions over carpets of coloured sawdust.
