Saint Ranieri and the Luminara

📍 Pisa · Pisa · Tuscany

Pisa's patron falls on 17 June, but the night before the city turns off the lights: the Luminara outlines the buildings along the Arno with oil lamps, the high point of the Giugno Pisano.

Saint Ranieri is the patron of Pisa and his day falls on 17 June. The celebration begins the evening before, on the 16th, with the Luminara: the word is Pisan dialect for illumination, and it names the night when the palaces along the Arno are drawn in small flames.

The Luminara is the eve of the patron's day and the best-known appointment of the Giugno Pisano, the month in which the city gathers its traditions.
