Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel
📅 Every year, on 29 September
On 29 September Cantagallo celebrates Saint Michael the Archangel; the municipal territory preserves the remains of Castello di Montauto.
The Bisenzio rises inside the comune, and the rest is wood: beech and chestnut forests where a herd of red deer lives, known all over Italy for the size of its stags. The largest beech, the Faggione of Luogomano, had a crown that covered nine hundred square metres: the wind uprooted it in 2022.
In 1224 the consuls of Cantagallo settled a quarrel between two villagers over the rights to a mill, and three years later another one with the monastery of Fontana Taona over some land: they had, the papers say, «full and free power to set the boundaries». The comune is a scattered one and the town hall is at Luicciana, which appears in a document as early as 1099 and gave itself a statute in 1415.
