Montemurlo celebrates the Exaltation of the Cross on 3 May.
On 1 August 1537, below the castle walls, the Florentine exiles who meant to overthrow Cosimo de' Medici were caught by surprise and routed: Filippo Strozzi was taken prisoner, and with that day the Florentine republic closed for good.
Of the old town the castle remains and the parish church of San Giovanni Decollato, raised between 1085 and 1096; in the oratory of San Girolamo the Fleming Giovanni Stradano frescoed everything, in 1583, with a liveliness that still surprises. Today Montemurlo, 17,908 residents, lies between Prato and Pistoia and works textiles; it is also the home of Jacopo Luchini, Paralympic champion.
