For years the British cycling academy kept its base here, and riders like Mark Cavendish and Geraint Thomas took houses in Quarrata. Otherwise the town is known as the furniture city: a web of small firms making sofas and upholstery.
The plain was marsh before: in the thirteenth century the Pistoiese diverted the Brana, the Bure and the Stella, which ran into the Ombrone at almost the same point and flooded everything at every spate. Above, on the slopes of Montalbano, stands the Medici villa La Magia, and at Tizzana the parish church of San Bartolomeo and the castle tower remain. There are 25,378 residents.
