Vescovana

Province: Padua · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,717 · Postal code: 35040

The name comes from «bishop», and it is written Veschevana as early as the thirteenth century: so it has nothing to do with cardinal Francesco Pisani, who built the villa here three centuries later, though some have supposed it did. On the arms, instead, there is the fortress with towers that Ezzelino da Romano destroyed in 1249.

The Pisani villa was not built for holidays but for work: the cardinal, who was bishop of Padua from 1524, chose Vescovana to house the administration of the lands his family had bought in the lower Paduan plain in 1478. Even the comune's banner takes its colours from the Pisani arms, and in the villa's grounds there is a funerary chapel of the nineteenth century.
