Read more →The province of Padua was created in 1806 as the Brenta department and took its present name in 1815, but the figure that defines it is demographic: with more than 900,000 residents it is the most populous province in Veneto and in the whole north-east, ahead of Verona and thirteenth in Italy. Its 102 municipalities are hemmed in by other Veneto provinces on every side, except for a narrow opening onto the Venetian lagoon in the south-east.
Padua holds what most people come for: the Scrovegni Chapel, frescoed by Giotto, and Prato della Valle, a huge oval square ringed by a canal and lines of statues. Outside the city the pace changes. Abano Terme built its economy on thermal water and on gardens such as the Montirone, while Cittadella, Monselice and Este keep their walls and castles. Distances are short enough to do it all by day trip.
