Taranta Peligna

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 399 · Postal code: 66018

On 26 October 1943 the German command had the order to leave posted on the walls: the village lay on the Gustav Line and the houses were to be blown up. People took refuge in the Cavallone caves, with winter coming on, or fled to Palena; meanwhile Taranta burned, the church of San Biagio was blown up and the bridge over the Aventino brought down. They came back on 13 June 1944, and found rubble.

The village was called Tarantola until 1881, and on the coat of arms there is still a spider. Woollen cloth was woven here that was itself called taranta, and the craft has not been lost. The Madonna della Valle, the patron, is said to have appeared to shepherds on the trunk of an oak, and from that trunk they carved her statue.
