In 1323 the records of the curia of Chieti say the village was double: upper Fraine and lower Fraine, which they called Frainelle. Of Frainelle nothing is left today, only the name of a place, Castello; and at Fraine there is still a Largo della Torre, because from there the tower looked across to the tower of the other village.
In the wood of the Vicenne, in 1056, two Lombards founded a Benedictine monastery dedicated to Santa Maria Mater Domini: two and a half centuries later it had already been reduced to a plain church, and the Caracciolo, who had taken its lands, appointed their own relatives as its rectors. The ancient pieces found round about suggest a pagan temple underneath.
