Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel
📅 Every year, on 29 September
On 29 September Liscia celebrates Saint Michael the Archangel in the sanctuary dedicated to him; the saint is also remembered on 8 May, the day of his apparition.
The hermitage of San Michele is a cave full of stalactites, with an altar at the far end and an oil lamp. The water that drips from the roof gathers in pools, and the faithful scoop it up with copper ladles. Beside the cave the d'Avalos had a chapel built in the eighteenth century, with a wooden Saint Michael attributed to the Neapolitan Giacomo Colombo; on the left there are two small walled-up rooms, where the hermits lived.
On the eighth of May two processions set out, one from Liscia and one from San Buono, and meet a little before the sanctuary; then the mass, then the queue for the water. The legend says a shepherd looking for a bull calf found it at the mouth of the cave, and there the saint appeared to him. In the village and around it there are still farmhouses built of raw earth.
