Tufillo

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 468 · Postal code: 66050

At Tufillo they say the village moved because of ants: there were so many that people came down from Monte Farano to where they are now. On the Farano the digs have found huts of the Iron Age, pottery and a bronze key of the fourth century before Christ with an Oscan inscription to Herentas, the Venus of the Italic peoples: perhaps her temple stood up there.

On 2 October 1943 the Germans shot four farmers suspected of helping the resistance; the month after, the village was caught in the battle of the Trigno, fought house by house, and ten civilians, forty German soldiers and a hundred Allies died there. The village runs in a line along the ridge, its houses set like the teeth of a comb, and on Christmas Eve the farchie are lit.
