The municipality rises from two hundred and fifty metres to almost two thousand seven hundred on the Focalone: two thousand four hundred metres of difference inside one territory. The village sits halfway up, on a ridge sheer above the Avello, its stone houses clinging to the rock and some of them dug into it: the rock dwellings have been a national monument since 1970.
In 1982, while digging for a tennis court, tombs of the fifth and fourth centuries before Christ came to light, with the bronze belt and the spear of a chieftain: they are kept in the village's Roman tower, turned into a museum. Above the houses stands the Cimirocco, a spur that looks like a woman seated with her head down and something in her arms; people have seen in it the goddess Maja, who had lost her son.
