Guardiagrele

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 9,367 · Postal code: 66016

Guardiagrele has 9,367 inhabitants on a promontory on the eastern slopes of the Maiella, and it is the seat of the national park. The name has been argued over at length: nineteenth-century scholars brought in the Greek hḕlios, the sun, and Gabriele D'Annunzio in The Triumph of Death speaks of Guardiagrele's "most ancient solar name". More recent philology is less poetic: "Grele" would come from the Marrucine ocris, the height, or else from a Latin personal name, and "guardia" from the Germanic warda, a lookout post. Which is to say: a lookout on a hill.

In 1391 Ladislaus of Durazzo gave the city the right to mint coin, in thanks for its support; in 1495, when it was made a fief of Pardo Orsini, the mint was reactivated and struck a cavallo bearing the new lord's name. Then came plagues, famines and earthquakes, and in 1799 the French troops of general Coutard laid siege to the city and sacked it, killing 328 of its people. What has remained, and what here has never stopped, is metalwork: at Guardiagrele, together with Agnone, they began making the presentosa, the gold jewel that the women of Abruzzo wear on feast days.
