Capestrano

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 895 · Postal code: 67022

In 1934 a farmer working a field pulled out the Warrior of Capestrano: a statue two metres nine high showing a king of the Vestini in full armour, carved in the sixth century before Christ. It came from the necropolis of Aufinum, the town that stood down below; today it is in Chieti and it is the emblem of Abruzzo.

In 1579 Costanza Piccolomini, in debt for the building of a church in Rome, sold the whole marquisate of Capestrano to Francesco I de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany: a hundred and six thousand scudi. Five years later Philip II of Spain made it a principality, and for a century and a half this piece of Abruzzo belonged to the Medici, so much so that Tuscan families came to live here.
