Navelli

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 550 · Postal code: 67020

On the plateau they grow the saffron of L'Aquila, and it was the Santucci who began, in the thirteenth century, shortly after Navelli took part, paying eleven ounces, in the founding of L'Aquila in 1269. The village was born from the union of nine hamlets, each with its church: hence Novellum, which later became Navelli, while the ship in the arms is explained by the crusades.

In 1423 the troops of Braccio da Montone laid siege to it during the war of L'Aquila: Navelli surrendered without being taken by force, and for this Joanna II allowed it to write in its arms Navellorum merito coronata fidelitas. The plague of 1656 killed eight hundred people out of about a thousand: an inscription on the front of the church of the Suffragio still counts them.
