Carapelle Calvisio and Montelapiano, at the other end of Abruzzo, are the two least populous comuni in the region, exactly tied. And yet this village gave its name to a large lordship: with Castelvecchio it formed the Demanium Carapelle, from which the barony of Carapelle took its name — in the thirteenth century it also included Calascio, Rocca Calascio and Santo Stefano di Sessanio.
The first time the village appears in a document, it is over a quarrel. The Chronicon of the monastery of San Vincenzo al Volturno relates that in 779 six men from the hamlet of Carapelle — and it names them, one by one — occupied the land of one of its cells: the dispute was long, and in the end the monks won it. The «Calvisio» is recent, added in 1874 to avoid confusion with the Carapelle in Apulia.
