Prata d'Ansidonia

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 501 · Postal code: 67020

Here stood Peltuinum, a town of the Vestini and later a Roman municipium, on the via Claudia Nova where the merchants passed and the shepherds going down to Puglia. When it was abandoned, they took it apart stone by stone: with those blocks they raised the castles of Camponeschi, San Nicandro and Tussio, and the church of San Paolo that stands among the ruins.

The municipality's name comes from Civitas Sidonia, the town of Sidonius, the lord to whom the territory of Peltuinum had been given. In 1254 Prata was one of the ninety-nine castles that founded L'Aquila. Of Peltuinum, in 1982, the theatre, the temple of Apollo and a stretch of walls came back to light; Castel Camponeschi, on the other hand, was lived in until 1963, and then emptied completely.
