On 11 July San Pio delle Camere, a municipality of 631 inhabitants in the province of L'Aquila, celebrates its patron Saint Pius I, pope.
The name comes from the cavities opened in the rock beneath the village, partly natural and partly dug out: inside them people kept livestock, stored food and made their cellars, and those are the «rooms», the camere. Below ran the tratturo Magno, and the village was one of the stations where the shepherds stopped for the night.
In 1254 San Pio took part in the founding of L'Aquila and was granted a plot there in the quarter of Santa Maria. In 1423 Braccio da Montone took the village and destroyed the fortress, which was never fully raised again. The 2009 earthquake struck the hamlet of Castelnuovo hard, the main village much less.
