Castel del Monte

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 447 · Postal code: 67023

The old village is still called the Ricetto, that is the shelter for people in flight: into it withdrew the inhabitants of the town that stood lower down, the one with three concentric ditches on the Colle della Battaglia. The houses are narrow towers of five or six storeys, leaning one against the other, and the walls of the village are made of the houses themselves.

The name appears in a bull of Honorius III of 1223. From 1579 to 1743 Castel del Monte belonged to the Medici of Florence, who held it as part of the barony of Carapelle and left it churches and bell towers. It lived on sheep: the village flock was more than fifty thousand head, and when Italian wool could no longer be sold the people left, for France, for Belgium, for the north. Today a tenth of them live here.
