Molina Aterno

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 419 · Postal code: 67020

The name comes from the mills, which here were many; the Aterno was added on 30 June 1889, because of the river. The village already appears in 787, in a chronicle of the abbey of San Vincenzo al Volturno, on which it depended.

The earthquake of 1703 brought the castle down, and with those stones they enlarged the houses: the village, though, still has its old shape, all climbing up to the top. What is left of the castle is the palace the Piccolomini made for themselves in the fifteenth century, with its arcaded courtyard; above the door are the arms of the Pietropaoli, who enlarged it in the seventeenth. On the doorways of the church of the Colle, of 1517, is the monogram of Jesus that Saint Bernardine used to preach.
