Feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Secinaro celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas of Bari, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
On the meadows above the village there is a field of craters. The largest is a hundred and forty metres across and holds a small lake; the others, from twenty metres down to two, are filled in and invisible: they show only when the snow melts and the sun strikes at a low angle. Where they come from is not known: some say meteorites, some a watering hole dug by shepherds, some the volcano.
Radiocarbon says the little lake formed in historical times. The name of the village is said to come from an altar to a goddess, called Cecina according to one scholar and Secina according to what they tell here. In the ossuary of the church of San Nicola, which for a while served as a garage, the ancient finds left in the village are gathered.
