Acciano

Province: L'Aquila · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 351 · Postal code: 67020

The name is that of a Roman landowner: Acciano comes from Accius, and meant the farm of the Accia family. In its present form the place name is fixed from 1028. The village stands on a rocky spur between Monte Bufame and the Pietre Fitte, facing the crests of the Sirente, with the Aterno running down in the valley. The municipality holds five settlements together: Acciano, Beffi, Roccapreturo, San Lorenzo di Beffi and Succiano.

In 1294 Celestine V passed through here on his way up to L'Aquila to be crowned pope, and by the church of the Madonna della Sanità he healed a local man of the falling sickness, that is epilepsy, with his blessing. This is not a village legend: it was put on record in the canonisation proceedings, where two witnesses from Acciano told the story. Later the village changed hands many times, until in 1419 queen Joanna II united and incorporated it into the city of L'Aquila, as the diploma says, «like a limb to its body».
