Feast of Saint Nicholas
📅 Every year, on 6 December
On 6 December Rivisondoli celebrates its patron Saint Nicholas; the town is known for its living nativity scene and its civic nativity art museum.
Rivisondoli lies at thirteen hundred metres, and in winter you feel it: in February 1980, at night, twenty-nine degrees below zero were recorded in the village, and on the fifth of January 2009 it reached thirty point six below — one of the lowest temperatures ever measured in an inhabited place in Italy.
The village appears for the first time in 724, in a diploma of the duke of Benevento, under the name Rigu Sundulum. The barony belonged to the Cantelmo, then passed from hand to hand: in 1623 a marquis of Capua, Fabrizio Mellucci, bought it for eighteen thousand ducats and was forced to sell it on to the Sardi of Sulmona. In 1913 king Vittorio Emanuele came with his family, and from there the snow tourism began.
