Gamberale is the highest municipality in the province of Chieti. The name appears as early as 1063 as Gambarum in Valva, among the lands the Normans took as they pushed towards Chieti; Valva was the diocese, and the castrum with its church stood on Monte San Michele, above the village. That church had been built by the Lombards, who had the archangel for their protector, and later the castle swallowed it inside itself. The last barons were the Mascitelli of Atessa, who also held Borrello.

In the winter of 1943 the village found itself on the Gustav line. In mid-October the Germans told the inhabitants to leave for the coast and Puglia, where the Allies were; a few old people who could not be moved and some families stayed, sure it would soon be over. The Germans left only at the end of May 1944. They had dug in among the ruins of the castle, on the top of the mountain, and on Christmas Eve 1943 the English, positioned at Capracotta, poured more than a hundred shells onto it: castle and church were reduced to rubble. In those months, between the shelling, the mines and the fighting, nearly two hundred civilians died.
