Abbateggio

Province: Pescara · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 441 · Postal code: 65020

In 986 a nobleman of Penne, Tresidio di Ota, had the castle built and gave it to abbot Adam of San Clemente a Casauria: the same abbot who the year before had put together Pietranico, not far away. The village's name, some say, is a contraction of Abbate-Giovanni, abbot John.

Outside the centre stands the sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Elcina: tradition tells of two dumb shepherd boys who saw the Virgin on a holm oak and got their speech back; the trunk of the tree is kept in the church. Up on the plateau, among the stones, there remain the tholos huts of a Neolithic village, which shepherds still used in the Middle Ages on their way down to Puglia. In 1929 the municipality was abolished and put inside San Valentino: it became a municipality again in 1947.
