Turrivalignani

Province: Pescara · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 884 · Postal code: 65020

The name is one piece each: Turri, the tower, and the Valignani, the Chieti nobles who held the fief in the eighteenth century; the two halves were only joined in the twentieth. The parish church of San Giovanni already appears in 1115, in a bull of Pope Paschal II. Beside the spur the village stands on open the Ripe, badlands cut by the rain.

After the war the young men left for Wallonia, to go down the coal mines. On the eighth of August 1956 the Bois du Cazier at Marcinelle caught fire and two hundred and sixty-two miners died, a hundred and thirty-six of them Italians. In front of the town theatre a monument remembers the men who went from here.
