Castiglione a Casauria

Province: Pescara · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 873 · Postal code: 65020

This is the village of the abbey of San Clemente a Casauria, one of the greatest works of Abruzzese Romanesque and for centuries the political centre of the valley. It was a monk of the abbey, Giovanni di Bernardo, who wrote the Chronicle of Casauria, which tells how the castle of Castiglione was built in 980 at the will of abbot Adam: and the oldest document naming Castiglione is of the same year, a sale of land.

Here they make the Moscatello, a vine of the house already known in the Kingdom of Naples in the seventeenth century, and the ciambella tied to the feast of Saint Blaise, eaten dipped in that wine. Below the village ran the via Claudia Valeria and stood the Roman settlement of Interpromium: where exactly, scholars have not finished arguing.
