Feast of Blessed Roberto da Salle
📅 Every year, on 18 July
On 18 July Salle, a municipality of 317 inhabitants in the province of Pescara, celebrates its patron Blessed Roberto da Salle with the procession of the palmenteri.
Salle lies at the foot of the Morrone, inside the Maiella national park, and for generations it has done one thing: strings. Harmonic strings for musical instruments and strings for surgical use, a craft that here became an industry and that the village tells in its museum of harmonic strings. The rest of its history is that of a place that had to start again: the Marsica earthquake of 1915 damaged half the buildings, and in May of the same year a landslide carried off part of the settlement.
After the Maiella earthquake of 1933 the government authorised the moving of the stricken villages, and the civil engineers chose the Colle district for Salle: the new village was called Salle del Littorio, and only after the war did it become simply Salle nuova. Of the old village, higher up, only the castle is left standing, bought back by the counts of Genoa and partly raised again by anastylosis — you can see it in the twin towers of the front — and now a museum and a restaurant. Lower down, the bridge over the Orta passes 104 metres above the river, and those who come here use it to throw themselves off, bungee jumping.
