Feast of San Nicola da Tolentino
📅 Every year, on 10 September
On 10 September Arsita, a municipality of 871 inhabitants in the province of Teramo, celebrates its patron San Nicola da Tolentino.
Until the twentieth century the village was called Bacucco, and in the local dialect it still is. The new name was not invented: Arseta and Bacucco were two distinct castles, and both of them stand on the bronze doors that abbot Desiderius had made at Montecassino in 1065, where the abbey's possessions in central Italy are listed. The change was decided on a report of the third of September 1905.
In 1807, when these mountains were full of insurgents against the French, the military commission sentenced Donato di Agostino of Bacucco to death: he was hanged the next day between Bisenti and Bacucco, and left on the tree for three days. In May the insurgents sacked the village and carried off young men to fight for them; in July one of them killed the archpriest.
