Feast of Saint Peter Martyr
📅 Every year, on 29 April
On 29 April Castel Castagna, a municipality of 491 inhabitants in the province of Teramo, celebrates its patron Saint Peter Martyr, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
The castle with its tower appears in the Catalogus Baronum of 1168, set there to guard Santa Maria di Ronzano, the abbey outside the village built in 1181: a Romanesque front, a Gothic interior of three naves with a wooden ceiling. The village is a ring of house-walls, and the Norman tower is built into the houses.
Until 1816 Castel Castagna was part of Bisenti; since then it has been a municipality, and the name, which was simply Castagna, took its addition in 1862. In 1683 the village suffered the raids of Santuccio's band, who were based at Torricella Sicura. Since the fifties people have been leaving, and an earthquake brought down a farmhouse that had already been abandoned.
