Torricella Sicura

Province: Teramo · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 2,670 · Postal code: 64010

The village's name comes from a castle of which almost nothing is left; the specification Sicura, officially adopted in 1863, had previously been the name of one of the five quarters of the settlement. The municipality, in short, took its surname from one of its own neighbourhoods. The castle stood on a hillock north of the village that people still call lu castille, or Colle Ciliegio, and at the end of the eighteenth century Luigi Ercole reported the discovery of an underground passage running from the castle out into the countryside, with some rusted weapons inside it. Under the same hill a local legend places a treasure guarded by an enormous serpent: on the tunnel, at least, legend and documents agree.

The ground here gives back Roman things in abundance. Just outside the built-up area have been found the remains of a temple, a number of tombs, inscriptions that suggest a bath building, a stone dedicated to a priestess named Numisia, and an altar with a dedication to the unknown god. The parish church of San Paolo, finished in 1806 on the site of the old pieve of San Paolo in Albata, has a brick façade closed by two concave, recessed wings, a European baroque type rare in Abruzzo; inside it keeps an altarpiece of 1627 by Sebastian Majewski, and into the outer wall of the presbytery are set Roman fragments and pieces of the medieval church.
