Salandra

Province: Matera · Region: Basilicata · Population: 2,934 · Postal code: 75017

On 6 November 1861 Crocco's bands found Salandra barricaded: the national guard and the mobile guard had shut themselves in the castle and were firing from above. What brought the town down was not the brigands but the people of Salandra: hostile to the gentry, they opened a way in from inside. The sacking and the fire lasted all night.

In the church of Sant'Antonio, attached to the convent Francesco Revertera had built from 1573 and which today is the town hall, there is an organ in the gallery dating from 1570: one of the oldest still working in Italy. Beside it hang two polyptychs, one by Simone da Firenze of 1530 and one by Antonio Stabile of 1580. There are 2,934 residents.
